REVIEW

ANOTHER LOOK

The following questions will help you review the material in Chapter 9.

1. How were Martha and Mary similar?

How were they different?

2. Briefly describe the family of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus.

3. What reasons might Mary have had for anointing Jesus’ feet and head with a lavish outpouring of spikenard?

From Jesus’ perspective, what did Mary’s action represent?

4. In what two ways did Jesus’ interaction with Mary and Martha contribute to His betrayal and arrest in Jerusalem?

5. In Luke 10:38–42, how did Martha and Mary each respond to Jesus’ presence in their home?

6. Consider the different responses of Martha and Mary when Jesus arrived after Lazarus’ burial. What can we learn about the inner temperament of these two women from that incident?

What does it mean to you that Jesus dealt with each woman in equally compassionate but distinctively different ways?

7. In what ways do Martha and Mary depict the contrast between doing good works and having faith?

BIBLE CONNECTIONS

These questions give you an opportunity to reflect on specific biblical passages associated with this lesson.

1. Read Romans 12:13. What does it mean to be “given to hospitality”?

How does hospitality relate to the phrase, “distributing to the needs of the saints”?

2. Read John 11:5. What happens in a person’s emotions and desires when that person comes to fully accept that he or she is loved by Jesus?

3. Read Luke 10:38–42. Highlight or circle phrases or words that seem to stand out to you. Why do you think these phrases or words are important to you?

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38–42)

4. Read Luke 7:36–50; John 13:1–7; and 2 John 10–11. Compare the hospitality Jesus received in Martha’s house to these examples of very bad hospitality Jesus had received from other people at other times.

5. Read Luke 6:36 and Romans 14:4. In what ways was Martha judging Mary?

Why wasn’t it Martha’s role to judge?

HIGHLIGHTING THE LESSON

1. Jesus said that Mary had “chosen that good part” in sitting at His feet, listening to Him, rather than bustling about in meal preparation with Martha (Luke 10:42). This establishes worship as the highest of all priorities for every Christian.
